THE NATIVE "ALL-AMERICAN" FRUIT
We
have approximately 3,300 bushes which are all irrigated, spray free and pruned for large delicious fruit. We do all
the pruning ourselves to be sure it is done in a way that is good for the bush and will produce the best berries. Our
varieties are in season four to five weeks, beginning in late June and lasting through late July.
Varieties: You will find eight varieties of blueberries at Spring Valley Farm. The varieties ripen at different times
during the season. The three main varieties are: Bluecrop, Blueray, and Berkeley. The other five varieties
are: Herbert, Bluejay, Jersey, Burlington, Bluetta and Coville.
Picking tips: A blueberry
is ripe and ready to pick when it is dark blue all around and comes off it's stem easily.
Storing
tips: To keep blueberries fresh, place dry berries in an air tight container in
the refrigerator. They will keep up to two weeks.
We recommend not washing the berries before freezing.
Freezing wet berries draws condensation that toughens their skin. They are best frozen in heavy duty freezer bags.
It is important to handle them as little as possible. When you are ready to use the berries, you may want to gently
rinse them. There is never any spray on Spring Valley Farm Blueberries.
Measurement Tip: A quart of Spring Valley Farm Blueberries weighs 1 3/4 lbs.
Nutritional
Info: Blueberries are a good source of vitamins A and C, Iron, Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Fiber.
They contain very high levels of antioxidants, those substances that help our bodies fight off cancer, heart disease and aging
characteristics.
Always check the RIPE REPORT page or call 410-378-3280, the day you are coming to the farm for up to
